About

Mission and programming

Vote Where You Rent's mission is to improve renting policy in Athens by empowering renters to vote in their best interests. We aim to increase renter voter turnout, registration, and political engagement. We believe the best way to do that is by demanding that politicians and ballots focus on issues that renters care about. So basically, we fight slumlords in the name of democracy.

We hope to build a repeatable campaign for getting college students and renters registered to vote each and every year, and to prove that college towns can become a major political force when properly mobilized (despite the haters).

We achieve our goals by having conversations, debunking myths, providing informational tools, and encouraging citizen-led ballot initiatives to directly influence local housing policy. We engage with future renter voters through door-to-door canvassing, tabling around town, presence at events, and providing kits to groups.
